man kathor ajhoo na pateenaa.
Even then, his hardened mind was not satisfied.

kih kbIr hmrw goibMdu ] (871-1)
kahi kabeer hamraa gobind.
Says Kabeer, such is my Lord and Master.

cauQy pd mih jn kI ijMdu ]4]1]4] (871-1)
cha-uthay pad meh jan kee jind. ||4||1||4||
The soul of His humble servant dwells in the fourth state. ||4||1||4||

Gond:

nw iehu mwnsu nw iehu dyau ] (871-2)
naa ih maanas naa ih day-o.
It is not human, and it is not a god.

nw iehu jqI khwvY syau ] (871-2)
naa ih jatee kahaavai say-o.
It is not called celibate, or a worshipper of Shiva.

nw iehu jogI nw AvDUqw ] (871-2)
naa ih jogee naa avDhootaa.
It is not a Yogi, and it is not a hermit.

nw iesu mwie n kwhU pUqw ]1] (871-3)
naa is maa-ay na kaahoo pootaa. ||1||
It is not a mother, or anyone's son. ||1||

ieAw mMdr mih kOn bsweI ] (871-3)
i-aa mandar meh koun basaa-ee.
Then what is it, which dwells in this temple of the body?

qw kw AMqu n koaU pweI ]1] rhwau ] (871-3)
taa kaa ant na ko-oo paa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
No one can find its limits. ||1||Pause||

nw iehu igrhI nw EdwsI ] (871-4)
naa ih girhee naa odaasee.
It is not a house-holder, and it is not a renouncer of the world.

nw iehu rwj n BIK mMgwsI ] (871-4)
naa ih raaj na bheekh mangaasee.
It is not a king, and it is not a beggar.

nw iesu ipMfu n rkqU rwqI ] (871-4)
naa is pind na raktoo raatee.
It has no body, no drop of blood.

nw iehu bRhmnu nw iehu KwqI ]2] (871-5)
naa ih barahman naa ih khaatee. ||2||
It is not a Brahmin, and it is not a Kh'shaatriya. ||2||

nw iehu qpw khwvY syKu ] (871-5)
naa ih tapaa kahaavai saykh.
It is not called a man of austere self-discipline, or a Shaykh.

nw iehu jIvY n mrqw dyKu ] (871-5)
naa ih jeevai na martaa daykh.
It does not live, and it is not seen to die.

iesu mrqy kau jy koaU rovY ] (871-5)
is martay ka-o jay ko-oo rovai.
If someone cries over its death,

jo rovY soeI piq KovY ]3] (871-6)
jo rovai so-ee pat khovai. ||3||
that person loses his honor. ||3||

gur pRswid mY fgro pwieAw ] (871-6)
gur parsaad mai dagro paa-i-aa.
By Guru's Grace, I have found the Path.

jIvn mrnu doaU imtvwieAw ] (871-6)
jeevan maran do-oo mitvaa-i-aa.
Birth and death have both been erased.

khu kbIr iehu rwm kI AMsu ] (871-7)
kaho kabeer ih raam kee a^Ns.
Says Kabeer, this is formed of the same essence as the Lord.

It is like the ink on the paper which cannot be erased. ||4||2||5||

tootay taagay nikhutee paan.
The threads are broken, and the starch has run out.

du-aar oopar jhilkaavahi kaan.
Bare reeds glisten at the front door.

kUc ibcwry PUey Pwl ] (871-8)
kooch bichaaray foo-ay faal.
The poor brushes are scattered in pieces.

ieAw muMfIAw isir ciFbo kwl ]1] (871-8)
i-aa mundee-aa sir chadhibo kaal. ||1||
Death has entered this shaven head. ||1||

iehu muMfIAw sglo dRbu KoeI ] (871-9)
ih mundee-aa saglo darab kho-ee.
This shaven-headed mendicant has wasted all his wealth.

Awvq jwq nwk sr hoeI ]1] rhwau ] (871-9)
aavat jaat naak sar ho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
All this coming and going has irritated him. ||1||Pause||

qurI nwir kI CofI bwqw ] (871-10)
turee naar kee chhodee baataa.
He has given up all talk of his weaving equipment.

rwm nwm vw kw mnu rwqw ] (871-10)
raam naam vaa kaa man raataa.
His mind is attuned to the Lord's Name.

lirkI lirkn KYbo nwih ] (871-10)
larikee larikan khaibo naahi.
His daughters and sons have nothing to eat,

muMfIAw Anidnu Dwpy jwih ]2] (871-11)
mundee-aa an-din Dhaapay jaahi. ||2||
while the shaven-headed mendicants night and day eat their fill. ||2||

iek duie mMdir iek duie bwt ] (871-11)
ik du-ay mandar ik du-ay baat.
One or two are in the house, and one or two more are on the way.

hm kau swQru aun kau Kwt ] (871-11)
ham ka-o saathar un ka-o khaat.
We sleep on the floor, while they sleep in the beds.

mUf plois kmr biD poQI ] (871-12)
mood palos kamar baDh pothee.
They rub their bare heads, and carry prayer-books in their waist-bands.

hm kau cwbnu aun kau rotI ]3] (871-12)
ham ka-o chaaban un ka-o rotee. ||3||
We get dry grains, while they get loaves of bread. ||3||

muMfIAw muMfIAw hUey eyk ] (871-12)
mundee-aa mundee-aa hoo-ay ayk.
He will become one of these shaven-headed mendicants.

ey muMfIAw bUfq kI tyk ] (871-12)
ay mundee-aa boodat kee tayk.
They are the support of the drowning.

suin AMDlI loeI bypIir ] (871-13)
sun anDhlee lo-ee baypeer.
Listen, O blind and unguided Loi:

Kabeer has taken shelter with these shaven-headed mendicants. ||4||3||6||

khasam marai ta-o naar na rovai.
When her husband dies, the woman does not cry.

ausu rKvwrw Aauro hovY ] (871-14)
us rakhvaaraa a-uro hovai.
Someone else becomes her protector.

rKvwry kw hoie ibnws ] (871-14)
rakhvaaray kaa ho-ay binaas.
When this protector dies,

AwgY nrku eIhw Bog iblws ]1] (871-14)
aagai narak eehaa bhog bilaas. ||1||
he falls into the world of hell hereafter, for the sexual pleasures he enjoyed in this world. ||1||

eyk suhwgin jgq ipAwrI ] (871-15)
ayk suhaagan jagat pi-aaree.
The world loves only the one bride, Maya.

saglay jee-a jant kee naaree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
She is the wife of all beings and creatures. ||1||Pause||

sohwgin gil sohY hwru ] (871-16)
sohaagan gal sohai haar.
With her necklace around her neck, this bride looks beautiful.

sMq kau ibKu ibgsY sMswru ] (871-16)
sant ka-o bikh bigsai sansaar.
She is poison to the Saint, but the world is delighted with her.

kir sIgwru bhY piKAwrI ] (871-16)
kar seegaar bahai pakhi-aaree.
Adorning herself, she sits like a prostitute.

sMq kI iTTkI iPrY ibcwrI ]2] (871-17)
sant kee thithkee firai bichaaree. ||2||
Cursed by the Saints, she wanders around like a wretch. ||2||

sant bhaag oh paachhai parai.
She runs around, chasing after the Saints.

gur prswdI mwrhu frY ] (871-17)
gur parsaadee maarahu darai.
She is afraid of being beaten by those blessed with the Guru's Grace.

saakat kee oh pind paraa-in.
She is the body, the breath of life, of the faithless cynics.

ham ka-o darisat parai tarakh daa-in. ||3||
She appears to me like a blood-thirsty witch. ||3||

hm iqs kw bhu jwinAw Byau ] (871-18)
ham tis kaa baho jaani-aa bhay-o.
I know her secrets well

jab hoo-ay kirpaal milay gurday-o.
- in His Mercy, the Divine Guru met me.

kaho kabeer ab baahar paree.
Says Kabeer, now I have thrown her out.
